ABSTRACT
In this talk, we focus on a brief introduction of neuroscience on several mental disorders, including depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s Disease. We will first review common brain regions and neurotransmitters implicated in these disorders. We will then characterize each disorder and provide leading hypotheses on the pathogenesis of each disorder, including dysfunctions in the neural circuitries and potential interactions between genes and the environment.
BIOGRAPHY
Cindy Chau received an A.B. degree in Neuroscience from Harvard College, Boston, Massachusetts, United States, in 2019, with cum laude honors. During her time at Harvard College, she co-founded and directed a peer counseling group to provide peer support and increase mental health awareness. She also pursued an independent honors thesis on the long-term effects of radiation on cognitive decline and glial pathologies under the supervision of Prof. Cynthia Lemere at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She is currently pursuing the Benjamin Trustman Fellowship, awarded by Harvard College’s Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, to pursue mental health work in Vietnam, and is doing her internship at the University of Education, Vietnam National University.
