24/04/2020: TS. Tống Văn Luyên (AVITECH), Smart Antennas for Interference Suppression in Wireless

Smart antennas have been widely employed in radar and wireless communication systems since they help to improve the signal spectrum utilization efficiency, interference suppression and energy saving by array pattern synthesis. In this pattern synthesis, the desired pattern can be obtained by controlling the excitation weights of antenna arrays. To enhance the interference suppression ability of smart antennas in wireless communications and radar applications, pattern nulling approaches based on adaptive beamformers are of particular interest. In our study, an adaptive pattern nulling approach of half-wave dipole uniform linear arrays (DULA) inspired by binary bat algorithm (BBA)-based beamformers and the phase-only control of array excitation weights has been proposed. This helps suppress interference with unknown directions in the sidelobes region. Several scenarios have been conducted to investigate the performance of the proposal including operation speed and adaptive pattern nulling with or without the effect of mutual coupling. The simulation results show that the proposed approach is a potential solution to precisely place nulls in any direction of unknown interferences while maintaining the main lobe and suppressing the sidelobes. In addition, regarding the pattern nulling, the approach proposed in this study demonstrates greater efficiency and higher speed, in comparison with those using binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO).
